British Welfare State Run Amuck

Quoting The Daily Mail:
“A family of former asylum-seekers from Somalia are living in a £2.1million luxury townhouse in one of Britain's most exclusive addresses at a cost to taxpayers of £8,000 a month…

Mr Nur said his former five-bedroom home in the Kensal Rise area of Brent, which cost £900 a week in housing benefit, was suitable for the family's needs but he said they had felt compelled to move because they did not like living 'in a very poor area' and were unhappy with the quality of local shops and schools…

Rules allow anyone who is eligible for housing benefit to claim for a private property in any part of the country they wish.”

No Subsidy for NPR

Quoting Jeff Jacoby
at The Boston Globe:
“A BILL pulling the plug on federal funding for National Public Radio was thwarted last week when the lame-duck Democratic majority in the US House of Representatives voted down a Republican effort to bring the measure to the floor. Introduced last summer by Colorado Republican Doug Lamborn, the legislation would bar NPR and its local affiliates from spending federal dollars on NPR programming. Of course there was never any chance that a bill targeting one of the nation’s most prominent left-of-center institutions would pass while Democrats still controlled the House. But a GOP majority is taking over in January, and ending NPR’s taxpayer subsidies ought to be high on its to-do list…

[In response, NPR] issued a statement so pompous and illogical that it could have been drafted in Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.

‘Today, good judgment prevailed as Congress rejected a move to assert government control over the content of news,’ it declared.”

Well, Allen’s son Peter has something to say about the TSA.

Quoting Peter Funt:
“I've never worked for the TSA. But once I spent a day putting airline passengers through what they believed was a full-body scanner…

I claimed that the metal detector wasn't working properly, and instructed passengers to lie down on the conveyor belt so they could ride through the [fake] X-ray machine along with their bags…

All but one passenger, a middle-aged man, willingly laid on the conveyor belt, belly down, and was transported through the box without protest…

I'm glad to see that many travelers are no longer simply submitting blindly to airport scanners, and are questioning invasive pat-downs. That's actually something worth smiling about.”

Game Over in the Carbon War?

Quoting Peter C. Glover
at EnergyTribune.com:
“While the next climate summit in Cancun, Mexico at the end of this month will make a show of sifting the geopolitical wreckage from last December’s climate summit, any real prospect for coordinated international action is, post-Copenhagen, dead in the political water. As if that were not enough, the bête noire of climate alarmists, King Coal, is, once again, reigning supreme…

The simple fact is that coal is cheap and accessible and a coal-fired power station can be up to eight times more efficient in electricity generation than renewable energy projects…

As the World Bank maintains, it is hard to fight poverty for people without any electricity. Put bluntly, when it comes to the developing world, investment in efficient poverty-eradicating electricity projects ranks morally higher than fighting a war against carbon that is based on a speculative theory, and which is, as the statistics make abundantly clear, already lost.”

About 40,000 Americans die on the highways each year (the numbers dropped during the recession of 2008/2009). Compared to the total US deaths in eight years of Operation Iraqi Freedom, about ten times as many Americans die in a single average year of highway fatalities. Compared to the 9/11 attacks, fourteen times as many Americans die in an average year on the highways.

Some suggest the TSA has already been responsible for an extra 1,200 deaths a year since 2001. That would amount to about 11,000 deaths and counting from TSA terror!

Basic Climate Science for David Appell

This post is a response to a comment left by David Appell.
David wrote some “interesting” material for Scientific American.
I believe I initially misunderstood David’s assertion.
I have revised this post to better address that assertion.
Updated on 7/17/11 to fix a broken link.

David,

1) You misquoted me. Readers can click here for the actual quote.

As you may know, the quote you presented was left by an imposter. When I leave a comment on any Blogger.com site my moniker (SBVOR) will always include a link to this page. More importantly, this avatar will always be associated with the comment. If either that link or that avatar is missing on any comment supposedly left by SBVOR, the comment was actually posted by a childish imposter.

2) You assert that:

“We know already that about a pre-anthropogenic level of 280 ppm CO2 warms the atmosphere about 15-20 F.”

I assume you are referring to the total estimated (clear sky) warming produced by 280 ppm of CO2.

Examine this chart
Click the image to examine the source:

Click the image to examine the source

Notice the following:

A) Estimates of the (clear sky) warming effect of 280 ppm of CO2 range from about 5C to about 12C (9F to 22F).

B) Each additional molecule of CO2 has exponentially less warming potential than the molecule which preceded it.

C) Estimates for the (clear sky) warming effect associated with doubling CO2 from pre-anthropogenic levels range from 0.64C to 1.46C (1F to 2.6F).

The alarmists tell us we have already seen about 0.7C of anthropogenic warming. Ergo, even the highest of these estimates would only leave another 0.76C of anthropogenic warming contribution to come in the next century (as we double CO2 from pre-industrial levels).

D) Click here and examine the directly cited peer reviewed science from which we can reasonably assume that anthropogenic CO2 is unlikely to contribute more than about 0.4C (0.7F) of warming over the next century.

Coupled with the on-going, uninterrupted 10,000 year cooling trend produced by natural forcing factors, we could see either a net warming or a net cooling over the next century. Details and citations on that are in the next section.

3) You ask:

“So why shouldn't another 35% [of CO2] lead to a few more degrees of warming?”

If you think CO2 is that powerful, you need to ask yourself the following far better questions:

A) Why are the Arctic AND the Antarctic both experiencing an on-going, uninterrupted 10,000 year cooling trend which -- despite recent warming -- shows NO SIGNS of abating. Sometime in the relatively near future, the saw tooth pattern seen in both of those graphs will turn sharply downward again. It might have already begun.

The citation links and more details are found here and here.

B) Why, during the current interglacial warming period, were the warmest temperatures reached about 8,000 years ago during the Hypsithermal?

The citation links and more details are found here.

C) Why has the current interglacial warming period failed to produce temperatures which even match, much less exceed temperatures reached during EACH of the previous FOUR interglacial warming periods?

The citation links and more details are found here

4) Actually, even the corruptocrats “leading” the entirely discredited IPCC know that CO2 alone is utterly incapable of causing even the slightest bit of alarm. The entire hoax is completely dependent upon a blind faith assumption as to how water vapor responds to the very tiny amount of warming which CO2 alone is (theoretically) capable of.

The most recent research is increasingly proving this critical lynchpin assumption to be not merely false, but entirely upside down.

As I noted in the previous link, this latest research goes a very long way towards explaining why this planet never reached any mythical “tipping point” during times when CO2 was (as a median estimate) up to 22 times higher than today.

“The Great Oil Spill Panic of 2010 will go down in history as mass hysteria on par with the Dutch tulip bubble…

There have been no major fish die-offs. On the contrary, a comprehensive new study says that in some of the most heavily fished areas of the Gulf of Mexico, various forms of sea life, from shrimp to sharks, have seen their populations triple since before the spill. Some species, including shrimp and croaker, did even better.

And meanwhile, the media has greatly exaggerated damage found in studies about coral, which is in some ways more vulnerable to oil and dispersant. Most of it is doing fine.

The growth of the fish population is not occurring because oil is good for fish. Rather, it is occurring because fishing is bad for fish. When fishing was banned for months during the spill, the Gulf of Mexico experienced an unprecedented marine renaissance that overwhelmed any negative environmental consequences the oil may have had, researchers say.”

Even Paul Krugman Knows Death Panels are Real

I previously documented exactly where the Death Panels (in a manner of speaking) were described in a previous incarnation of the ObamaCare legislative language.

Today, Paul Krugman acknowledges that -- when government controls health care, government bureaucrats decide who lives and who dies.

Once the “Progressives” control our health care system, they then have to control our eating habits. You see, this too is a matter of controlling government spending. The government has to spend way too much to treat obesity related illness; therefore, the government must prevent obesity.

This is the slippery slope. Every new venture into regulating our lives cascades into countless more ventures into regulating our lives. Soon, we will have no freedom to make any of our own choices.

Welcome to the brave new world of Socialist tyranny.

Global Warming Forest Destruction Debunked

A new study (Science 12 November 2010: Vol. 330. no. 6006, pp. 957 - 961) refutes global warming tropical rainforest destruction hysteria.

IPCC computer models (inaccurately) suggest (as a “best estimate”) warming over the next century somewhere between 1.8C and 3.6C. Actually, 0.4C is a more reasonable estimate. But, based upon recent studies, even that estimate is likely too high.

The study we’re looking at today examined the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56.3 million years ago), a time of “rapid warming” when temperatures in tropical regions “are estimated to have increased by 3° to 5°C”. This was a time when temperatures ranged from roughly 8C to 12C warmer than we see today.

This study reports that (emphasis mine):
“We investigated the tropical forest response to this rapid warming… We observed a rapid and distinct increase in plant diversity and origination rates… The tropical rainforest was able to persist under elevated temperatures and high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, in contrast to speculations that tropical ecosystems were severely compromised by heat stress.
In other words, this study found nothing but BENEFITS to this extremely rapid warming and “high levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide”!

Another myth bites the dust -- including the new media meme of a biodiversity crisis.

Well, given the source of the IPCC tropical rainforest hysteria mongering, it should come as no surprise that real science (once again) debunked the purely political and utterly discredited IPCC.

The climate change scare is dying

Quoting Christopher Booker
at Telegraph.co.uk
(I inserted the links):
“Nothing more poignantly reflects the collapse of the great global warming scare than the decision of the Chicago Carbon Exchange, the largest in the world, to stop trading in ‘carbon’ – buying and selling the right of businesses to continue emitting CO2…

Next Friday is the first anniversary of the leaking of the ‘Climategate’ emails

Next month sees the anniversary of the Copenhagen conference – the largest ever held, with 100,000 delegates – which collapsed in an acrimonious shambles…

This was followed by all those scandals surrounding the IPCC itself, hitherto regarded as the supreme authority on global warming. It emerged that the most recent IPCC report was riddled with errors, and that many of its more alarming predictions were based, not on proper science, but on claims dreamed up by environmental activists….

it has become clear that the 20-year-old climate scare is dying on its feet.”

Tom Selleck’s 'Blue Bloods' - Fair & Balanced

Quoting David Forsmark
at David Horowitz’s News Real Blog
(emphasis mine):
“The television season’s best surprise is easily Blue Bloods starring Tom Selleck as the New York City Police Commissioner, and the head of a multi-generational family of cops. What looked in trailers to be a clunky cop drama is both a surprisingly original take on the genre and a provocative look at some hot-button issues…

In a mere 7 episodes, Blue Bloods has taken on enhanced interrogation, profiling, vigilantism, and restrictions on the kinds of force a cop can use to protect his life. And while both sides of the issue are presented fairly, this is a show from a cop point of view, starring one of Hollywood’s most prominent conservatives…

Blue Bloods can’t live forever on issue-oriented shows, (and I really hope it doesn’t become dominated by the conspiratorial back story it introduced in the pilot) but it has shown it can handle a standard crime plot, a good sign. And with its engaging cast and the smart people running things, I’d say this has the potential to be classic television.”

Usually, I wind up tolerating Leftist propaganda for the sake of being entertained. It’s also useful as a means of keeping my finger on the pulse of how my fellow citizens are being indoctrinated. But, there are limits to what I will tolerate. When “Chase” took the propaganda two steps too far (two weeks in a row) I quit watching it.

In the case of “Blue Bloods”, it’s refreshing to see a show which takes on tough issues and presents both sides fairly. Erin -- the A.D.A. -- takes the ACLU angle and Danny -- the hard nosed cop -- is often her foil. Of course, when both sides are presented fairly, the Conservative side pretty much always wins. Now, if only the Lame Stream Media could learn from “Blue Bloods” how to do their jobs.

Experts are now “pretty confident” it was an airplane:

Makes sense to me.

It's Sputnik all Over Again!

Quoting MailOnline:
“American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier…

The Americans had no idea China's fast-growing submarine fleet had reached such a level of sophistication, or that it posed such a threat.

One Nato figure said the effect was ‘as big a shock as the Russians launching Sputnik’ - a reference to the Soviet Union's first orbiting satellite in 1957 which marked the start of the space age.”

When Tree Huggers Become Bear Huggers

Madison Ave types are masters of emotional manipulation.

The tree huggers will shed a tear.
The rest will just laugh:

Click here to debunk Arctic sea ice & polar bear hysteria.

Psst…
Don’t tell the bear huggers that their electricity is most likely generated by burning hydrocarbons -- they think it comes from magic fairies riding unicorns on treadmills (with polar bears dancing in the background).

But, be especially careful not to mention that pesky little “sustainability” problem with rare earth elements. That would REALLY kill their “I’m saving the planet” buzz.

NRO - Repeal The Seventeenth Amendment

Quoting Todd Zywicki
at National Review Online:
“Repealing the Seventeenth Amendment would go a long way toward restoring federalism and frustrating special-interest influence over Washington…

Repealing the Seventeenth Amendment would not be a panacea for what ails the American political and constitutional system… But repeal would be a step in the direction of restraining an imperialistic central government and frustrating special-interest influence. Whether or not it is good politics, it remains sound constitutional design.”

The Uber-Liberal Fox News

Shepard Smith anchors the Fox News Channel flagship “straight news” segment. This is the one hour on FNC which should avoid editorializing at all costs. IMO, Sheppie Smith is not qualified for the job.

My impression of Shepard Smith as a card carrying Liberal was first cemented as I watched the 2004 Presidential election returns. The moment Fox News declared Bush the victor over Kerry, Shepard threw a raging on-air hissy fit (no, I’ve never been able to find a substantiating video clip -- so you’ll have to trust me on this one).

Well, Sheppie is at it again. I saw Rosen’s reaction to Sheppie’s outburst live on the air last night and thought to myself that I would probably see a video clip today. I did.

Mystery Missile? Launched off Cali Coast

Update - Mystery seemingly solved.
Who launched what (on 11/8/10) and why?

At 0:56 in the embedded video, note the corkscrew effect visible in the smoke trail. On my very first viewing, this struck me as odd and inexplicable. However, a stunt plane would be very likely to corkscrew on a vertical (or near vertical) ascent.

However, as this theory notes, we are still left to explain the apparent fireball behind the engine. A reflection of sunlight? Okay, but what about the size of the smoke trail and other unusual characteristics?

MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan Advocates Revolution

Quoting MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan:
“Are things in our country so bad that it might actually be time for a revolution? The answer, obviously, is yes.”

MSNBC Political Analyst is a Socialist

Quoting MSNBC Anchor Lawrence O’Donnell:
“I am a Socialist”
Lawrence O’Donnell in his own words:

Just two years ago (or less), any suggestion that any Democrats were avowed Socialists was invariably derided as fanciful paranoia. Today, many Dims are no longer hesitant to admit what we Conservatives have known all along.

Frankly, it is NOT good news to see these Socialists come out of the closet! It means they are more confident than ever that they are winning -- and, for almost a century now, they have been.

Creeping Socialism has been an American reality since the “Progressive” days of Woodrow Wilson. With the election of Obama and his appointment of his various overt Socialists and Communists, the Socialist Creep became a full on gallop.

Either we stop it NOW and REVERSE IT NOW, or we will all go down!

Celebrate Veterans Day

Veterans Day is November 11th.
Celebrate at Outback Steak House
(or wherever you please):

Kudos to Outback Steak House for showing some gratitude to America’s finest.

For my part, words cannot express my gratitude to all who have ever honorably served.

On Veterans Day, if you wish to donate to a good cause, I recommend The Wounded Warrior Project.
