“When the companies that supply motor fuel close the books on 2011, they will pay about $6.8 million in penalties to the Treasury because they failed to mix a special type of biofuel into their gasoline and diesel as required by law…

But there was none to be had. Outside a handful of laboratories and workshops, the ingredient, cellulosic biofuel, does not exist.

In 2012, the oil companies expect to pay even higher penalties for failing to blend in the fuel, which is made from wood chips or the inedible parts of plants like corncobs. Refiners were required to blend 6.6 million gallons into gasoline and diesel in 2011 and face a quota of 8.65 million gallons this year.”

117 Year Flat Temperature Trend in Texas

The previous post examined the lies surrounding the 2011 Texas drought. Most of the propagandists exploiting that drought also made hay about 2011 recording the second highest Texas temperatures on record.

Here are a few “minor” details the propagandists would rather ignore:

1) Peer reviewed science has found a 30% warming bias in NOAA temperature data.

2) The hottest year on record in Texas was 1921.

3) The entire 117 year temperature record shows an absolutely FLAT temperature trend rate of 0.00F per decade (without accounting for the warming bias documented in point #1).

Texas Drought is NOT Indicator of Climate Change

According to NOAA’s NCDC (see chart below), 2011 was the driest year on record in Texas.

As expected, the usual propagandists are exploiting this drought to the hilt. The following Google search currently results in almost 5 million results:

But, there are a few “minor” details about that NCDC data which the utterly dishonest propagandists deliberately ignore. Such as:

1) The second driest year was 1917 (with 0.7% more precipitation than 2011). The record high precipitation was set in 1919 (just two years later).

2) The third driest year was 1956 (with 4% more rain than 2011). The very next year (1957) witnessed the 8th highest precipitation in the 117 years of available records.

3) The precipitation trend rate since 1895 shows Texas precipitation is increasing at a rate of 0.02 inches per decade (about as flat a trend line as you can get).

So, history suggests that Texas will probably recover from this drought in a year or two (by which time, the utterly dishonest, purely political propagandists will be telling some new set of bald faced lies).

Does Wind Power INCREASE CO2 Emissions?

1) Let’s start by noting that the global hysteria over CO2 emissions is utterly unjustified.

2) We already know that Ethanol did exactly the opposite of everything it was purported to do.

3) Now, we see (below) that wind power (also heavily subsidized by governments) may very well do the same.

“Wind generated electricity requires back-up capacity of conventional power stations. This capacity is required to deliver electricity to consumers when wind supply is falling short. To have the non-wind power stations ramp up or down to compensate for the stochastic wind variations causes extra efficiency loss for such power stations…

Wind energy easily costs more than it yields, not only in monetary terms, but also in non-sustainable energy use. Thus it will easily increase rather than decrease CO2 emission.”

Obama's Epic Failure - December Jobs Edition

As reported by Newsbusters, the Obama media are falling all over themselves to sing the praises of unemployment falling all the way from 8.6% in November (when 315,000 stopped looking for jobs) to 8.5% in December (thanks to holiday related seasonal hiring).

Somehow lost in all these hosannas sung for Obama (the great Messiah) is the fact that Obama promised that, if Congress rushed through the passage of his so-called “stimulus” package, unemployment would now be down to 6.0%. Without the “stimulus”, Obama warned we would now have 6.8% unemployed.

So, by Obama’s own metrics, his so-called “stimulus” (predictably) actually made things worse -- FAR WORSE!

But, count on the Obama media to portray abject failure as a grand success (so long as a Democrat led the charge).

In May of 2002, NASA launched the AQUA satellite. The AMSU instrument, onboard the AQUA satellite, began collecting global temperature data in July of 2002. The chart below demonstrates the catastrophic amount of warming witnessed in the nine years this instrument has been collecting data.

Oh, wait…
The current global temperature is actually lower than it was when the satellite began collecting data.

Well…
Pay no attention to THAT minor detail! We know that CO2 is causing catastrophic warming (our computer models tell us so).

And…
We know that we MUST dole out $45 TRILLION dollars to hideously corrupt crony capitalists in order to save the planet.

When I Google [UC Davis pepper spray], I currently get over 63 thousand results (on an event which happened yesterday -- a confrontation with UC Davis Campus Police which was deliberately provoked by an OWS mob).

Looks bad, eh? Predictably, the terminally gullible have fallen for the brazen propaganda video, causing all sorts of people to make a foolish and ill-informed rush to judgment.

Here, are the facts…

1) The OWS mob had setup an ILLEGAL encampment (the sort of encampment which has led to rapes, murders, riots, suicides, thefts, assaults, vandalism, violence, tuberculosis, Zuccotti Lung Disease, drug overdose fatalities, public sex, public nudity, public defecation, unsanitary living conditions and more -- click here for a short version of the OWS rap sheet).

2) The university authorities ordered the Campus Police to clear out this ILLEGAL encampment.

3) I’ll let video shot by one of the mob tell the rest of the story:

A) Part I of III

I begin at the point where the Campus Police inform the punks they are violating the law and -- if they do not leave peacefully -- they will be arrested. They begin to arrest individuals and the mob gets outta control. The mob chants "stop beating students" (when, clearly, nobody is being beaten). The officers then DEESCALATE the situation, STOP arresting punks and engage in an extended standoff.

B) Part II of III

At 8:55, the badly outnumbered officers are completely surrounded by an angry mob and have circled the proverbial wagons in self-defense. In the innermost circle are those few they managed to peacefully arrest before the mob got out of control. The angry mob then threatens the officers by chanting:

"If you let them go, we will let you leave."
"If you let them go, we will continue to protest peacefully."
[Meaning, they will otherwise resort to violence.]

C) Part III of III

i) At 4:08, the cops again try to remove an individual and are met with resistance. THAT is when they FINALLY resort to pepper spray. Judging by the reaction (or lack thereof), this must have been a pretty dilute mixture. Pepper spray produces discomfort, but it is absolutely harmless. It is designed to REDUCE the level of resistance, REDUCE the level of violence and REDUCE the odds of injury as the arrest is made. Ultimately, the pepper spray proves to be inadequate against this angry mob -- the angry mob retains control of the situation.

ii) At 8:07, the angry mob begins the process of intimidating the badly outnumbered Campus Police officers out of the park.

D) Thanks to the shameless propaganda from the Lame Stream Media, the outcome at the moment is:

The ILLEGAL encampment remains, the rule of law has been tossed in the shitter, the nation has yet another ObamaVille encampment sure to produce (by design) the same mayhem we have seen from the others and a lot of innocent people are being persecuted by a mob of fools who fell for the propaganda produced & directed by the UC Davis mob.

In a bit of irony, the “Occupy Earth” sign was painted on a cardboard box from Home Depot (the evil, greedy corporation that provides their customers with the best values on the planet in home improvement goods.) Looking at her representation of Earth’s continents, one can only hope she is not a geography major.

The proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline (from Canada to Texas) pits one Obama base against another. Union bosses want the jobs; environmental extremists (predictably) oppose everything having anything to do with hydrocarbons.

“[This project] has been subject to 36 months of review - dutifully following a prescribed process that resulted in thousands of pages of documentation”

After all that bureaucratic red tape, Obama -- scared to death of alienating either base -- played the coward, kicked the can down the road, put the blame on the State Department and destroyed what little confidence anybody in the private sector might have had that there was any chance of creating jobs and doing business under the capricious tyranny of this loony tunes administration.

With this move, the Narcissist-in-Chief once again demonstrates that the ONLY thing he cares about is trying to get reelected.

It is an undeniable scientific fact that life begins at conception.

The moment when life begins is -- by definition -- a transformational event. At the moment of conception, two haploid cells transform into a diploid cell and become a unique human being. Every moment after conception is a transitional event which varies in timing with each pregnancy. Every other attempt to define the moment when life begins is a purely political contrivance whose sole intent is to rationalize homicide.

I choose the word homicide carefully. Because, even with abortion, there are certain instances where there is such a thing as “justifiable homicide” -- for example when the mother’s life is clearly in danger.

Personally, I would (not easily) tend to say that rape is also grounds for the “justifiable homicide” of a child conceived during that rape. But, I would also have deep respect for any woman willing to let that child live.

The ONLY thing that utterly corrupt, crony capitalist spending spree would do is to hasten the impending fiscal collapse of all of Western Civilization.

If we are to have ANY hope of avoiding this fiscal collapse, it is IMPERATIVE that we have a President who is unabashedly opposed to unspeakably arrogant politicians pretending they can micromanage climate change.

Virtually everybody in the media is shocked -- SHOCKED, I tell you -- to see that the Occupy Everything mobs have resorted to violence, destruction, mayhem and lawlessness. Oakland is the latest and currently most visible example of the OWS mobs across the country behaving this way.

The media are bending over backwards to claim those responsible are not part of the OWS crowd. The media meme is that these are a tiny minority of anarchists which have infiltrated the overwhelming majority of OWS “peaceful protesters”.

I have yet to see anybody in the media (in relation to the Oakland debacle) mention that a Democratic pollster surveyed the Manhattan “peaceful protesters” and found that 31% of them openly endorsed violence as a means to advance a “deep commitment to radical left-wing policies” (a commitment which was pervasive throughout the crowd). I would wager a very, very large majority of the Occupy Everything mobs all across the country would openly endorse vandalism -- too bad the Democratic pollster did not ask that question.

Just to establish a baseline…
This is how these people regularly behave at home in their daily lives. We all see it in our own neighborhoods all the time. Bring them all together and you simply see a super-concentrated example of what they do to their own neighborhoods on a daily basis.

Beyond that…
If the organizers of the OWS mobs were not eager to see these results, why did they structure their protests in a way that was absolutely guaranteed to produce these results? Are they really that stupid? Or, is this exactly what they wanted and expected all along?

I’m going with the latter…
The Left do this all the time. They setup an inherently illegal and destructive protest custom designed to create a conflict with law enforcement and raise tensions to the boiling point with the certain knowledge that the situation will explode. Now, in that last image, the black line may not (in Dr. Spencer’s view) hold any predictive value. But, it is a perfect fit with the AMO index for that period. Owing to the means whereby it is calculated, the black line lags the AMO index by pretty much exactly 10 years. In other words, the AMO index bottomed out in 1976 and peaked in 1998. The black line bottomed out in 1986 and peaked in 2008.

The AMO Driving BEST Climate Change

I had previously eyeballed it from the OLS charts.
Changes were minuscule & conclusions unchanged.
This post documents that, once we correct for the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, the newly released BEST data show an average global warming rate of 0.5C/100 years. This is identical to the multi-century NATURAL steady warming rate of “0.5°C/100 years” described by peer reviewed science (Akasofu, 2010).

The BEST data recently debuted with a firestorm soon erupting between the two co-authors of four BEST papers. In the preceding link it is suggested that the BEST data indicate “the planet has warmed by almost a degree centigrade since 1950”.

But, in the aforementioned firestorm, even Muller admits that:

“the BEST data suggested that world temperatures have not risen for about 13 years”

That observation leads Judith Curry to confirm she is accurately quoted to say:

“Whatever it is that’s going on here, it doesn’t look like it’s being dominated by CO2”

That caused me to ponder what the BEST data would show if we examined the exact same time frames I used in a previous analysis of the impact of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (aka AMO) on temperature trends in the USA. I did just that and arrived at the conclusion described in the first paragraph.

The AMO as a Driver of Climate Change

The following primarily deals with the impact of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (aka AMO) on temperature trends in the USA. Click here to examine the global impact. Click here to examine the USA impact in more detail.

I have previously asserted that any honest analysis of temperature trends must begin and end at similar points in the AMO cycle. This is particularly true for USA temperature trends.

Global warming hysteria mongers frequently claim that the warming of the last 30 to 35 years was primarily caused by humans. But, when examining USA data, if one simply insists upon looking only at trends which begin and end at similar points in the AMO cycle, that much hyped warming (human induced or otherwise) virtually disappears.

The following charts show that -- from 1913, forward -- there is virtually no USA warming which cannot be explained by AMO warming cycles. So, if humans are warming the entire planet at a catastrophic rate, why -- once we correct for the AMO cycles -- is this not evident in the USA?

In the following three charts, I have selected beginning and ending dates based upon a Wikipedia chart of the AMO index and (more precisely) the raw data from NOAA from which that chart was derived.

The IPCC tells us that human activity has been the primary driver of temperature trends over the last century. But, the data make it perfectly clear that the AMO has been the primary driver of temperature trends over the last century -- especially in the USA. I submit to you that the AMO will continue to be the primary driver of climate change over the next century as well.

Orbach Trips Over the AMO & Fails to See it

In a prior post, I destroyed a letter to the Wall Street Journal editor sent in by CAGW apologist Raymond L. Orbach. The perfectly natural AMO warming cycle was the foundation for that debunking.

The most recent AMO warming cycle began around 1976 and peaked around 1998. Now, we see a quote from Orbach himself wherein he stumbles upon the AMO warming cycle and still fails to see it.

Quoting Raymond L. Orbach:

“When I started looking at literature, I noticed that there was warming beginning in 1980”

Quoting the so-called “journalist”
who wrote this purely political propaganda piece:

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that temperatures across the United States have increased by 1.5 degrees since the 1970s.”

True enough. Click here and chart NOAA annual data from 1975 through 2010. You’ll find a trend rate of 0.51F per decade over a period of roughly 3 decades and you can reasonably reach the same conclusion.

But, the time frame of 1975 through 2010 is egregiously cherry picked. It begins around the bottom of an AMO cooling cycle and ends around the top of an AMO warming cycle. Furthermore, click here and see that peer reviewed science finds “an estimated warm bias of about 30%” in the NOAA data (meaning the actual temperature increase over this cherry picked timeframe is more like 1.05F).

Any reasonable trend analysis would have to begin and end at a similar point in the AMO cycle. In each analysis below, I have selected start dates and end dates which reflect similar points in the AMO cycle based upon a Wikipedia chart of the AMO index and (more precisely) the raw data from NOAA from which that chart was derived.

An AMO cooling cycle bottomed out in 1913. The most recent AMO cooling cycle bottomed out in 1976. Click here and chart the annual average USA temperature over that time frame (1913 to 1976). You’ll find a CAGW busting trend rate of 0.01F per decade!

An AMO warming cycle peaked in 1933. The most recent AMO warming cycle peaked in 1998. Click here and chart the annual average USA temperature over that time frame (1933 to 1998). You’ll find a CAGW busting trend rate of 0.01F per decade!

Between these two extremes, let’s pick equivalent moments when the AMO cycle crossed the baseline in the chart. Start at 1925 (when an AMO warming cycle crossed the baseline) and end in 1995 (when the most recent AMO warming cycle crossed the baseline). Click here and chart the annual average USA temperature over that timeframe (1925 to 1995). You’ll find a CAGW busting trend rate of 0.00F per decade!

Finally, let’s compare the AMO warming cycle timeframe of the last 3 decades to the previous AMO warming cycle. An AMO warming cycle began in 1913 and peaked in 1933. Chart the average annual USA temperature over that timeframe (1912 to 1934). You’ll find a trend rate of 0.56F per decade (slightly higher than the 0.51F per decade figure cited by our so-called “journalist”).

Polling the Occupy Wall Street Mob

Below, I am quoting longtime Democrat Douglas Schoen (former pollster for Bill Clinton). Schoen compares the 1970 violent and destructive protestors to the current Occupy Wall Street protestors. Schoen correctly notes that the 1970 protestors then represented the lunatic fringe of the Democrats. Schoen mistakenly believes the current Occupy Wall Street protestors are the analog of their 1970 counterparts. He’s wrong.

The Occupy Wall Street mob now represents the base of the Democrat Party. Schoen advises the Dims to distance themselves from this mob. They cannot and will not -- this is their base. In 2012, their own base will bring them down.

Today, Dims can only win elections by cleverly disguising who they really are. Obama won by pretending to be a moderate. Does anybody believe that anymore? The Occupy Wall Street mob has forced their hand. They can no longer pretend they are not radical Socialists. They are now forced to admit it. In doing so, the Dims will lose the Independent vote and, thereby, lose the 2012 elections.

For that, the rest of America owes a debt of gratitude to the OWS mob and all the affiliate mobs.

Debunking Raymond L. Orbach's CAGW Letter

True believers in the catastrophic man made global warming myth seem impressed by a letter to the WSJ editor by one Raymond L. Orbach. So, let’s debunk it:

1) Orbach’s central point is that satellite data show a warming trend over the last 30 years. True enough (thanks to the most recent -- perfectly natural -- AMO warming cycle). Carefully examine that link in it’s entirety and you’ll find all that is necessary to fully debunk Orbach’s letter.

Notable in that debunking is the fact that the longer term trend shows the planet has, for hundreds of years, been naturally warming at “a steady trend rate of 0.5°C per century” -- a full order of magnitude LESS than the (not at all unusual) 30 year AMO driven trend touted by Orbach. What follows is just (some very tasty) icing on the cake.

2) Orbach cites a paper allegedly claiming that a trend of at least 17 years is required “to detect overall trends.”

I have a theory as to how that (odd) number was calculated -- pretty simple really:

A) NOAA is on record stating:

“The trend in the ENSO-related component for 1999–2008 is +0.08±0.07°C decade, fully accounting for the overall observed trend. The trend after removing ENSO (the "ENSO-adjusted" trend) is 0.00°±0.05°C decade.”

2010 was an El Nino driven warm year (part of the ENSO variations). Hence, the satellite data demonstrate that the ENSO-adjusted flat trend continues (making for 13 years without any global warming).

B) Phil Jones (of ClimateGate infamy) is on record stating that there has been no “statistically significant” global warming since 1995 (16 years ago). That assessment, by the way, met NOAA’s 15 year standard for invalidating all the IPCC computer models (see the link for substantiation).

So, is it mere coincidence that 17 years is now determined to be the (revised) magical number? You decide.

3) The nature of climate change is that there are countless natural cycles embedded within other natural cycles (which, in turn, are embedded within still more natural cycles). Human activity has probably contributed some very tiny (and utterly inconsequential) amount of warming. But, the fact is that there is nothing about current temperatures or current trends which is even remotely close to falling outside the bounds of natural variations.

Truth is, the warmists always want us to examine only their carefully cherry picked date ranges (and ignore all others). They are particularly keen on making sure we never look as far back as the previous (perfectly natural) interglacial warming period (much less the 3 very similar warming periods which preceded that one). Yeah, the data from those Vostok ice cores are particularly “inconvenient”, eh?

Foster The People - Pumped up Kicks

On balance, I detest SNL. In general, SNL substantiates the case that the so-called “Progressive” ideology is a mental disorder (with Manhattan being ground zero for the most severe manifestation of said mental disorder).

Never the less, there are three reasons why I DVR every new episode of SNL (and then watch, at most, about 15 to 20 minutes of the program).

1) The opening skit is occasionally amusing (this week was not).

2) Weekend Update is usually amusing (even when spewing Leftist propaganda).

3) SNL is my one remaining connection to the world of pop music. Usually, this segment only causes me to shake my head at what passes for talent these days. But, on very rare occasions, I find something at least marginally impressive (or, if not impressive, at least fresh, original, creative, unique or otherwise intriguing).

Last week, the country music group Lady Antebellum was enjoyable. One thing I appreciated was a very attractive female performer who -- unlike most these days -- was NOT dressed like a $2 hooker. Their song -- Just a Kiss -- was sweet, innocent and charming. Their other song -- We Owned the Night -- was also a good one.

This week, the musical guest was “Foster the People”. The name was familiar. But, I had never sampled their music. They performed their most popular song - “Pumped up Kicks”.

The music -- composed before the lyrics -- is catchy, upbeat dance music (with a carefree whistling interlude). The lyrics are dark as hell -- getting inside the mind of a homicidal Columbine style perp. It makes for an intriguing contradiction (and style point #1).

SNL being SNL, my expectation was that there was some gun control message lurking in there somewhere -- apparently not.

Mark Foster is quoted to say:

“To me the epidemic isn’t gun violence; the epidemic is lack of family, lack of love, and isolation.”

That sounds like a family values assessment any Conservative could agree with.

That said, the lyrics seemed to me to address free speech principles (apparently, trampled upon by MTV), property rights and the virtue of striving to be your best -- again, Conservative values. But, that’s just my interpretation.

Please! Tell me again who thinks it is a good idea to utterly waste $76 TRILLION in order to pretend we can micromanage climate change. Kyoto has already PROVEN that we can waste all the money we want and we will not even come CLOSE to changing the global temperature in any way which could even be measured.

Furthermore, history tells us that the estimate of $76 TRILLION would balloon into at LEAST a full order of magnitude above that figure.
