Updated 10/10/09

Review the “Coal Liquefaction” piece of
this bar graph from this post.

Well folks, Coal Liquefaction (and MORE) is on its way:

“(August 7, 2008) – Rentech, Inc. (AMEX:RTK) today announced that the Company has successfully produced synthetic fuels at its Product Demonstration Unit (PDU) in Commerce City, Colorado…

The Rentech Process is a patented and proprietary technology that converts synthesis gas from biomass and fossil resources into hydrocarbons that can be processed and upgraded into ultra-clean synthetic fuels, specialty waxes and chemicals. These energy resources [used to create synthetic fuels and more] include natural gas, biomass, municipal solid waste, petroleum coke and coal.”

This was a successful demonstration on a test scale.

There are MANY commercial scale coal to liquid (CTL)
production plants currently under consideration.

Note: The previous link cited this EIA source.

Remember, South Africa has been using Coal Liquefaction
on a commercial scale since 1955.
