The Current Cooling Trend: 2008/09

According to NOAA, the current cooling trend continues in the continental United States. Meteorologist Anthony Watts might have a thing or two to say about how reliable the temperature measuring stations are. For now, we’ll just take NOAA at face value.

The NOAA data show that 2008, year to date, is a whopping 0.17F warmer than the average year to date temperature for the period 1895 to 2008.

More importantly, the year to date temperatures for 1998 to 2008 show a cooling trend of -0.84 degF / Decade and rapidly accelerating (downward).

The following chart can be replicated by visiting this NOAA page and selecting the following:

Period: Year to date
First Year to Display: 1998
Last Year to Display: 2008
Base Period, BegYear: 1895
Base Period, EndYear: 2008
