A) Methane contamination of drinking water caused by hydraulic fracturing remains unproven
PNAS 2011 108 (43)
B) Lack of data to support a relationship between methane contamination of drinking water wells and hydraulic fracturing
PNAS 2011 108 (37)
C) Hydraulic fracturing not responsible for methane migration

Update #1:
Click here for a more comprehensive examination of this topic.
A documentary film titled “Gasland” popularized the allegation
that hydraulic fracturing contaminates drinking water.
We now have some science on this.
But, the science does not address these questions:
Did the contamination exist before the fracking?
What harm may (or may not) result?
Quoting PNAS
(note that “associated with” is
NOT the same as “caused by”):
“Directional drilling and hydraulic-fracturing technologies are dramatically increasing natural-gas extraction. In aquifers overlying the Marcellus and Utica shale formations of northeastern Pennsylvania and upstate New York, we document systematic evidence for methane contamination of drinking water associated with shale-gas extraction.”

Natural seepage of oil is “associated with” offshore drilling.
Why? Because natural seeps are a GREAT place to find oil!
Offshore drilling actually REDUCES that natural seepage!
I would wager that fracking does more to REDUCE
naturally occurring methane contamination.
