May the Boston Tea Party and the Scott Brown people power revolution spread across our great nation all the way to my state of California. Bravo Senator Brown!
Yep, that would -- sadly -- be a more appropriate flag to fly over this White House. But, my guess is Cap & Trade was (mercifully) dead with or without Brown.
I am thrilled with this victory and filled with guarded hope -- mostly for the message it sends to Washington. Brown is a very talented politician and an extremely personable guy. His acceptance speech filled me with hope that he shares the fundamental values which made this country great and which might yet rescue us from the scourge of Big Government.
That said, I watched Brown’s press conference this morning and noted that he voted for Massachusetts Universal Health Care, apparently thinks that has been a success (it has -- predictably -- been a colossal failure) and still believes it is the role of government to ensure that all are insured -- just not through this version of ObamaCare.
My fear is that -- in practice -- Brown will be to the Left of McCain.
Anything that saves us from the current version of ObamaCare is a giant victory -- and Brown MIGHT be able to do that. However, I am not at all certain that Brown represents the full picture of where we need to take our country.
Then again, Brown strikes me -- rightly or wrongly -- as a man of great integrity who just might grow into the job.
I would expect Brown to be left of McCain but he will also be far right of Kennedy. At this point, I am happy with any progress in the correct (right) direction.
Although I am guilty of using the same Left/Right terminology, I actually don't see the political spectrum as running from Left to Right. I see it as running from freedom to totalitarianism. Fascism and Communism are two sides of the same totalitarian coin. Absolute freedom (aka anarchy) is not ideal. But, the ideal government would be at least 50% smaller than our present government.
The overwhelming majority of Federal government spending should go to funding the military -- one of the very few legitimate functions of the Federal government.
A note to all readers: For any readers who might be confused as to how our military spending compares to entitlement spending, this post should clear that up (for those who have eyes to see).
“under current law, federal spending on Medicare and Medicaid measured as a share of GDP will rise from 4 percent today to 12 percent in 2050 and 19 percent in 2082—which, as a share of the economy, is roughly equivalent to the total amount that the federal government spends today…
Federal spending on programs other than Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security—including national defense and a wide variety of domestic programs—is likely to contribute far less, if anything, to the upward trend in federal outlays as a share of GDP.”
Providing entitlements (of any sort) is NOT a legitimate role for any level of any government!

Paul,

Time will tell.

John,
I agree (with one caveat).

The CBO states it more succinctly:
“under current law, federal spending on Medicare and Medicaid measured as a share of GDP will rise from 4 percent today to 12 percent in 2050 and 19 percent in 2082—which, as a share of the economy, is roughly equivalent to the total amount that the federal government spends today…
