at the Chicago Sun-Times:
“The power of Ayn Rand devotees has impressed some Hollywood distribution executives, who took note of the hefty $5,640 per-theater average scored by ‘Atlas Shrugged: Part 1’ during its opening weekend…
business has been brisk enough for producers Harmon Kaslow and John Aglialoro to expand from 299 theaters to 425 this weekend and to 1,000 by the end of the month. They don’t have enough film prints to fill all the orders.”
As always, the Progs are completely outta touch.
Here in the People’s Republic of Steamboat Springs, Atlas Shrugged is not yet showing. Will it ever show in Steamboat Springs? If the movie theaters demonstrate the sort of healthy self-interest advocated by Rand, the movie will show. If theater management sacrifices their self-interest on the altar of their “Progressive” ideology, the movie will not show. Only time will tell.

I think it telling that so many 'reviews and commentaries' on the current movie begin by describing Rand as Russian. Oddly, I never knew she was Russian even when first reading her books many decades ago. I always thought she was an American (which of course she was).
I suspect the subtle emphasis on her original nationality is intended by many to be code for don't trust this person. Liberals. Ya gotta love em.

John,
Anything is possible from the so-called "Progressives".
That said, she did immigrate from Russia. She also lived through the Bolshevik revolution.
Her first novel -- We, The Living -- is her only novel set in her native Russia (at the time of the Bolshevik revolution). It is also my personal favorite among her books.
If you read it, you will likely never forget two trains parting ways in the night. I never have. Is a similar scene coming soon to a country near you?
